•  Locate emergency exits.

•  Carefully review the map in the Guest Directory

•  Locate the nearest fire extinguishers and fire alarms

Safety Tips
• Lock your door securely using all locking devices when you are in your room and always use the viewport to identify visitors.

Never leave your vehicle unlocked. Do not leave valuables in plain view. Keep fishing equipment, boogie boards, etc. in your room.

Safety and Security Information

We hope you won’t need any first aid while visiting. If you do have any of the following problems, these hints may help ease the pain. In case of emergency, dial 911.

•  Bee Stings

Apply a baking soda paste and ice. Benadryl ointments can help stop the itch.

•  Jellyfish Stings

Apply vinegar, sugar, salt, and dry sand. Lifeguards keep a bottle of vinegar solution to spray on stings. Meat tenderizer works well, too. After 20 minutes, rinse with salt water.

•  Oyster Shells, Barnacles

Oyster shells and barnacles are often attached to dock pilings. Cuts and abrasions can result in serious infections. Clean the wound with peroxide. Medical treatment is advised.

Stingray

Rinse with water and apply heat. Apply pressure to wound with finger to stop bleeding.

Seek medical attention. It is possible that the barb can break off in the flesh and cause infection.

Sunburn

Soak in cool water unless skin is broken, or blister red. Aloe gels and spray are available in pharmacies. Ibuprofen may help ease some of the pain.

Surf Rules

• Look for warning signs of red flags before entering the surf.

• Discuss surf conditions with beach attendants or check on advisories from the National Weather Service available at www.nws.noaa.gov.

• Do not swim alone and avoid swimming too far from shore. Do not dive into the ocean unless you know the water depth.

• Be especially cautious when surf is high.

Rip Currents

Often mistakenly called undertows, powerful rip currents can pull even the most experienced swimmers away from the shore. Rip currents are formed when water rushes out to sea in a narrow path. Some of the telltale signs of rip currents are a difference in water color (either murky or dark) or large, choppier waves in the rip current with smaller, calmer waves in front of a sandbar or to its sides. In a rip current, foam or objects, such as a float, move steadily out to sea. If you are caught in a rip current, don’t panic or try to swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Rip currents are rarely more than 30 feet wide. If you can’t break out of the rip current, float calmly until it dissipates, usually just beyond the breaking waves. Then swim diagonally to the shore. If you don’t swim well, stay in the wading depths near the shore and watch for sudden drop-offs.

THE HOTEL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST ITEMS OR ARTICLES LEFT IN YOUR ROOM.

HURRICANE PROCEDURE

Unfortunately, June through November is Hurricane Season. Listed below are procedures you will need to follow to assure your safety in the event of an evacuation notice.

1.     PLEASE take all valuables with you. Shutters on the Banks is NOT responsible for personal items lost or stolen.

2.     Clean out your refrigerator and remove all perishable items, as the electricity will be turned off during an evacuation and all food items will spoil. Please take your food items with you or dispose of them properly.

3.     Please return your unit keys to the Front Desk.

4.     Please evacuate AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! This allows our employees ample time to secure the property. Our employees cannot leave until YOU leave, so please consider their safety as well as your own.

5.     Before a hurricane arrives, there are usually gusts of high winds; Shutters on the Banks is not responsible for damage to personal property caused by flying debris.

Dare County has two Evacuation Routes:
US Hwy. 64/264 West and US Hwy. 158 North.

•      Don’t wait to evacuate.

•      Routes become congested as the storm approaches.

•      There are no American Red Cross approved shelters in Dare County.

•      Inland shelter locations will be broadcast on local radio stations.

•      Bridges close and ferry services cease with winds over 40 miles per hour.
